Some call it a narrative drama others, a documentary though it's obviously one of those fake documentaries in the mold of the Paranormal Activity franchise of films, or The Last. Much has been made and questioned about the authenticity of the material provided in Damon Russell's Snow on Tha Bluff, and through the research I've done, I resort to calling it a mockumentary for two reasons. NOTE: On a final note, consider how I call this film a 'mockumentary' in my opening paragraph. The film begins when Curtis steals a camera from some college kids and decides to begin documenting his life and the neighborhood dynamic of The Bluff, a concept which scream hoax-umentary, but by blurring the line between documentary, restaged events, and fiction Russell crafts an absolutely engrossing character study that is both heartfelt and brutal. Russell’s part documentary/part fiction film follows stickup man, crack dealer, and father Curtis Snow through the Atlanta projects as he looks for the next hustle to support himself and his baby mama. I managed to see Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, a Sundance premiere (a review is forthcoming), but the first Slamdance feature I saw has also been the most stunning of my time in Utah: Damon Russell’s Snow on tha Bluff. Aside from the excitement of having a film in the festival, the week has been dominated by a slew of really fabulous screenings. I am out in Park City supporting a short film I edited called Everyday, which is an official selection at the 2011 Slamdance Film Festival.
